People are complicated creatures, so group topics that can benefit the mentally ill will be varied. Depending on your demographic population for your group, you will have to decide what group topics will be best. Ask whether you will want to educate for understandings, build skills, or create one moment of calm.<span id="more-15244"></span></p>
<p>You will want to take into account your setting. Are you on an inpatient unit, in an outpatient office, working in a church or community center, or meeting in someone&#8217;s home? Keep in mind that the following group topics for mental health will vary on usefulness for different populations.  Prioritize for your group&#8217;s needs and the length of treatment.<br />
Large Categories of Mental Health Group Topics</p>
<p>These are primary group topic categories which can be broken down into smaller, more specific topics. Each of these major topics are at least indirectly related to most mental health issues, so you will be on the right track if you use one of these general topics and narrow down to what you really want your patients or clients to learn.</p>

<p>In the following paragraphs you will be presented with more specific topics under each heading. Some are difficult to place in one category or another due to being related closely with more than one large category. Keep in mind that these interrelated topics may be more important to teach first and may also have a larger impact on your mentally ill clients. Teach your clients the big picture that behaviors can affect their lives in multiple ways.<br />
Health and Wellness Groups</p>
<p>These are just a few of the topics you might teach under the health and wellness category.</p>
<p>* Sleep and Rest Patterns: Your clients are likely to have sleep problems that exacerbate their mental illness, which in turn causes more sleep problems. It&#8217;s a cycle that they will need to learn to prevent from spinning out of control. Teach your clients ways to get the right amount and kind of sleep.<br />
* Exercise: As obvious as it may seem, exercise is one of the best things you can do for your mental health. Stress levels are reduced, etc. Teach your clients how to make exercise a part of their stress reduction plan.<br />
* Nutrition: People who have mental illness can have all kinds of things influence their appetite from the illness itself to medications. Teach patients what might happen, and how to stay on top of nutrition.<br />
* Medication Education: Patients on psych medications will need educated on things like side effects and how to deal with them. But more important is the patient&#8217;s ability to maintain their medicine regimen. Accessing medicine can be a barrier or even just remembering to take it.<br />
* Recognizing Warning Signs: Warning signs help warn patients from having an all out crisis event.  But they will not be able to catch the warning signs early enough if they don&#8217;t have some strategy to recognize the signs before it&#8217;s too late.  Identify personal warning signs and strategies of reaction.</p>
<p>Personal Control Groups</p>
<p>These are just a few of the topics you might teach under the personal control category. Keep in mind that some of these will fall under other categories too.</p>
<p>* Anger Management: This is an obvious topic when you have patients who are unable to control emotions. Sometimes you need to teach this before teaching the relationships groups because the anger has to be under control first.<br />
* Stress Management: Teach your patients about stress and what it&#8217;s purpose is. Then teach the all the negative stuff that happens when you don&#8217;t control your stress. Teach your patients how to handle things without getting overly stressed out.  Teach stress management techniques for work and at home.<br />
* Personal Hygiene: Hygiene can sometimes fall to the wayside when a person is not thinking correctly. It becomes less of a priority and needs to be brought up in some populations of patients. Teaching this delicate topic will take some tact on your part.<br />
* Impulse Control: Impulses are what get us in trouble, but the mentally ill can have lowered inhibitions just as a person might who is on drugs. Unfortunately this can happen naturally, and it can be next to impossible for the person to control impulses. Help patients cope with impulses and remind themselves to make wise choices.</p>
<p>Relationships Groups</p>
<p>These are just a few of the topics you might teach under the relationships category.</p>
<p>* Assertiveness: Assertiveness is one of those topics that anyone could learn and benefit from. It&#8217;s a life journey to make it a habit to communicate actively and respectfully. Teach your patients how to communicate assertively even when others are not assertive. Teach them a concrete yet effective communication strategy.<br />
* Boundaries: Also related to assertiveness is boundary setting. Use visual and role play examples to get your patients to see the importance of setting healthy boundaries and respecting others.<br />
* Conflict Management: Conflict with family members and others can be a source of great stress that leads to crisis events. Teach your clients to problems solve their conflicts with others in appropriate, productive ways. Managing conflict through compromise<a title="Health and Fitness" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="http://www.pkdoctor.com/" rel="nofollow"> health</a> or collaboration will provide alternatives for patients to acting irrationally.<br />

<p>These are a couple of the topics you might teach under the values and beliefs category.  This category is possibly underrated, because it allows the patient to be motivated to learn and be involved in the other groups.  Use these groups when patients are not interested in doing any work.</p>
<p>* Goal Setting: Goal setting is an important part of living life to the fullest. It may be beneficial to allow patients to set their own daily goals, but also you will want to identify some long term goals to help motivate them to stay well and achieve those goals.<br />
* Values, Beliefs, and Goals: Teach your patients how values and beliefs at the core of them determine their behaviors. Allow them to acknowledge their own values and make a goal to align their behaviors with their values and beliefs.</p>
<p>Safety Planning</p>
<p>Safety planning involves anything that can keep a patient safe in time of crisis.</p>
<p>* Identifying Supports: Your clients may not know that they have more supports than they think.  Identifying these supports will give them the option to react constructively when faced with challenges. These supports can be internal and external.<br />
* Discharge/Safety Planning: When it&#8217;s time to discharge your patient or client, you want to send them away with a clear plan for staying safe and well.  Create a group that focuses on what&#8217;s next.  Help them see a way to manage out of your care.</p>

<p>The mental health system can suck you in and spit you out or it can totally ignore you.  Navigating the system can be a challenge, so help your clients know how to use mental health services for the best benefit possible.</p>
<p>* How to Talk to your Doctor: Your patient may only have a few minutes with the psychiatrist.  Teach your clients what to ask and what to tell the doctor.  Teach your clients how to say it to get the information they want.  Role play this one for best results.<br />
* How to Get Support: This can involve many things from getting help from a family member to talking to the pharmacist about medicine side effects.  Clients will likely benefit from knowing what options they have for getting help from the mental health system.</p>
<p>Leading Mental Health Groups</p>

Just as women need particular nutrients during pregnancy or for protection from breast cancer, men need nutrients that can help them maintain muscle mass, prevent prostate cancer, and more. Many foods that tend to be favorites among men are not the best choices for good health. Yet a healthy diet and regular physical activity can help prevent heart disease and cancer, the No. 1 and No. 2 killers for men over 35. They can also enhance performance, from the board room to the bedroom.<span id="more-15243"></span></p>
<p>Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, notes that any food that is good for the cardiovascular system is also good for erectile function in men.</p>
<p>&#8220;Nutrients that are good for the heart improve circulation to all parts of the body, and these same nutrients provide a layer of protection against cancer and other chronic diseases,&#8221; says Gerbstadt, a Florida-based physician and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.</p>
<p>Quality nutrients are also critical for maintaining immune function and preventing bone loss, muscle loss, and oxidative damage from the environment, Of course, any one (or 10) foods can&#8217;t do the job alone. An overall healthy lifestyle, which also includes not smoking and getting regular physical activity, is what&#8217;s really important for health, say the experts.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not about one single food or even a handful of foods. What is more important is the pattern of regularly consuming a diet rich in a variety of essential nutrients,&#8221; says Joy Bauer, MS, RD, author of Joy Bauer&#8217;s Food Cures and Today Show nutrition expert.</p>
<p>Still, adding nutrient-rich super foods to the diet, as well as taking a daily multivitamin designed exclusively for men (for nutritional insurance), can give men&#8217;s nutrition a boost, says Dave Grotto, RD, an American Dietetic Association spokesman.</p>
<p>With the help of the experts, WebMD came up with this list of 10 disease-fighting foods that can be a good start to improving health:</p>
<p>Food for Men No. 1: Oysters</p>
<p>Could there be something to the legend that oysters are the food of love? Well, it&#8217;s true that just a few oysters each day will deliver a full day&#8217;s supply of the antioxidant mineral zinc. Zinc is involved in hundreds of body processes, from producing DNA to repairing cells.</p>
<p>&#8220;Research shows that adequate zinc may protect against cellular damage that leads to prostate cancer,&#8221; says Grotto. &#8220;Sexual functioning of the male reproductive system, including increased sperm counts, is also enhanced with zinc.&#8221;</p>
<p>You can also get your daily recommended dose of 11 milligrams a day by eating other shellfish, lean beef, lean pork, or legumes.</p>
<p>Food for Men No. 2: Bananas</p>
<p>Bananas are a great portable source of quick energy and are rich in potassium, which is needed to regulate nerves, heartbeat and, especially, blood pressure. Diets rich in potassium and magnesium (which is also found in bananas) can reduce the risk of stroke.</p>
<p>As a super source of vitamin B-6, bananas can also aid your immune system, help form red blood cells, ensure a well-functioning nervous system, and assist protein metabolism. So enjoy a banana each day, at breakfast on your whole grain-cereal or before your workout at the gym.</p>
<p>Not a banana fan? Orange juice, milk, tomato products, and beans are other good sources of dietary potassium.</p>
<p>Food for Men No. 3: Fatty Fish</p>
<p>No list of superfoods would be complete without the healthy fat, omega-3 fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fats are the preferred form of fats in your diet for many reasons. They can benefit the heart, circulation, and immune system and reduce the risk for prostate cancer, among other things.</p>
<p>&#8220;Omega-3 fatty acids are potent anti-inflammatory foods that can help lower triglyceride [blood fat] levels, reduce aches and pains in athletes, and offer relief with certain kinds of arthritis,&#8221; says Bauer.</p>

<p>Maintaining a good health program for your cat will help increase it longevity and quality of life. Good health for your cat is no accident. It&#8217;s a concerted effort between you and your veterinarian to provide every opportunity for your cat to grow into and enjoy its senior years.<span id="more-15241"></span></p>

6. Be a responsible owner and discuss the options of spaying or neutering if not already done.<br />
7. If you have never brushed a cats&#8217; teeth before ask your veterinarian to show you the proper technique. Good dental hygiene if very important to the over all health of your cat.</p>
<p>A favorable response from your veterinarian to these questions will give you peace of mind and will make sure your cat in on the right road to maintaining good health.</p>
<p>Just like in humans, the aging process in cats is natural and brings along with it changes in hormone balance, calorie burn rates, normal behavior and even change in the physical appearance of your cat. These are some of the very reasons it&#8217;s important to maintain a regular schedule of veterinarian visits so that you can provide your cat the opportunity for good health as it ages. Everyone will tell you that the frequency of checkups usually depends on the cats&#8217; age. The older the cat the more often it needs to see the vet. 3. Visually check your cats&#8217; oral health regularly. If you don&#8217;t know brush your cats&#8217; teeth &#8211; start &#8211; at a minimum 2-3 times per week (daily is better).<br />
4. Always keep a clean litter box.<br />
5. Be aware that during hot months you need to provide your cat with a cool spot to rest or nap, and during the cold months you want to make sure your cat has a warm and cozy spot for this inactivity.<br />
6. Make sure your cat gets some type of daily exercise. The intensity and length of the exercise have to moderate as your cat gets older.<br />
7. Try to maintain a stable home environment. Older cats don&#8217;t handle &#8220;change&#8221; well. Change will stress the older cat, and stress can lead to health problems.<br />
8. As your cat ages it&#8217;s a good idea to keep it indoors more and out of harms way. An older cat doesn&#8217;t have as good of hearing as it did when it was younger, and it doesn&#8217;t have the same agility. In its prime it was able to get itself out of a troubling spot, but as it gets older that ability diminishes.</p>
<p>You are your cats&#8217; best health advocate, and partnering with your veterinarian who will provide care and sound advice, make up a winning team to ensure your cats&#8217; senior years are the best years of its life.</p>

<p>You certainly love your children; however, are you paying close attention to the living habits you are teaching them?  Are you seriously concerned about what they eat, drink, breathe, and touch?</p>
